2019 will see our best project yet... The goal is to increase and establish a habitat for turtle nesting.. OH MY GOSH!! TURTLES!!! In doing so not only will the turtles get a safe haven to lay eggs in, the fruit bats will also have a habitat regenerated. By regenerating and revegetating the dunes we will be providing homes for two very important species of local fauna.
and... Check out the view!!!
Is this not one of the best tree planting sites you have ever seen?? Picturesque views of the Keppel islands and a beautiful swim-able beach!
Its going be easy to plant trees and remove weeds in the hot sun if we can keep cool in this lush playground.
A wall of Casurinas carefully placed along the high tide mark, will help create a barrier and protect the dunes behind them.
We will be planting a variety of local native trees to help resurrect this part of the dunes. . As well as lots of ground covers and shrubs. We are creating a dunal rain forest after all!! So we will need a variety of plants, not just trees.
The following dunal species and beach scrub species will be provided: Alphitonia excelsa; Banksia integrifolia; Breynia oblongifolia; Carpobrotus glaucescens; Chionanthus ramiflora; Clerodendron floribundum; Clerodendrum inerme; Corymbia tesselaris; Cordia dichtoma; Crotalaria sp.; Cupaniopsis anacardiodes; Diospyros geminata; Dodonea viscosa; Eragrostis interrupta; Euroschinus falcatus; Ficus rubignosa; Glochidion lobocarpum; Hibbertia scandens; Jasminum simplicifolium; Mallotus discolor; Mallotus phillipensis; Micromelium minuatum; Petalostigma pubescens; Planchonia careya; Pleiogyne timorense; Sophora tomentosa; Vigna marina; Vitex trifolia
As well as planting, we will be weeding.. and lots of it!!! Target Weed Species - Mother of Millions, Dark Blue Snake Weed, Silver Leaf Sunflower, Stinky Passionfruit & Prickly Pear.
Certain weeds, can regenerate from the smallest of plant matter and some even spread hundreds of seeds just by brushing into them.. It is important to listen carefully to the instructions of the group leader. Deal with each plant accordingly.
Bags will be necessary for these nasty pesky weeds. Complete removal of the entire plant whilst retaining as much of the dune's integrity as possible is what we are here for! Take care when weeding, do not rush. Or else your efforts will be futile!!!
Working hard to create habitats certainly builds up an appetite, so for all you hard working volunteers we will be having a yummy catered lunch, the park adjacent to our plant site is lush and comes with toilets, sheltered seating, water fountain, plenty of shade and car parking!!
We will cater for vegans and omnivores and celiacs. If you have further dietary requirements or allergies, please bring your own lunch.
